98-frame Clip

Keyframes by::iconjeffreylai:

This is another shot from the 1000 teaser animation that ~greenestreet, *jeffreylai, and I have worked on as part of Secret Sauce Studio.

Our goal is to produce eight 90-second episodes of animation.

The only way we can do that is by raising $60K. We've collected $9K since launching Monday. That sounds like a nice number, but is juuuuuust barely short of putting us on track to hitting our goal.

If we hit our goal then we'll be able to bring more animators on and start changing the landscape of how 2D animation is made in the West.

If you want to see independent, quality animation become a reality then pledge. We'll be able to pull together something worth seeing.

THANK YOU to those who have pledged from dA! More animation on the way!

NOTE: This was done in Photoshop & After Effects.

More animation from 1000:

r u guys available for freelance work? I'd like to help you reach your 60k quota. Currently my production's still banging out comprehensive character designs, but we need character, action and atmospheric samples of our animation for our kickstarter pitch.

My film isn't as comprehensive as your's. We're just using establishing scenery stills and then black and white animation for the rest, with some establishing insert shots to specify colors and mood. At least until we come by some decent tender. My heart goes out to you, man. Best of luck making 60 thou.

This is badass! Nicely done. Even the shadow of the body approaching the window before it busts through.. A very well done piece! It makes me miss animation classes.

Now that's saying something! Thanks for noticing the shadow. It was a fun little bit to throw in there. :XD:

No problem! ^^ Are you kidding?! That shadow is what really MAKES the piece hit the high note for me! It makes sense due to the lighting being in the building. The body would obviously block the light and, as long as the window is somewhat translucent or transparent, it makes perfect sense to see the form and colors coming toward it.

Ah.. ^^; Sorry, I rambled. Anyway, it was my pleasure!

Your timing spooks me. The whole scene seems unnatural. The initial window break is a bit too long, the throw itself is to slow while he's in the air is not smooth. The final bounce of the car to the ground needs to be a little longer. It's like he just fell into an unnatural position.

Well, you'll have to go to :iconjeffreylai: on that one. They're his keyframes. My work here was on the compositing, fx, cleanup, and color.

His timing has gotten tighter since doing this shot. This was done months ago.

Also, try knocking out a similar shot at 12fps and see how tight you'd be able to get it. You'll find that it's not easy.

Thanks for taking the time to write regardless.

Another great shot. Ironic, I spoke with a friend the other night, after having seen your first fight scene shot, about this exact effect in AE (and here you've done it). I think the rain effects work really well when used with illustrated animation. Very nice.

best,

Thanks, Chad!

Yeah, it's just simple-looking enough to blend in and work. You've got to fight with it a little to get it to sit well in a shot, but it's worth it. Just wish I could get the splash particles to work like I want.

Got to keep pushing, regardless.

Nice work as usual. For the rain, do you have a regular old layer/file you use for all your rain pieces?
Reply
:iconthatld:
thatLD Featured By Owner Jul 5, 2013  Professional Filmographer
Thanks, man. I handle the rain differently for every shot. This particular one has three layers of rain: foreground, midground, and background, respectively. They are each set to fall at different rates and angles to feel more like the real thing.

We don't quite have a budget yet for high-end rain particles so I get around that by tweaking After Effect's basic rain effect (CCRain) until it looks a decent quality.

tl:dr version = Nope. I build it from scratch every time. :XD:

Just a little perspective problem: the window looks closer to us than the car, so it looks weird that the guy smashes against what's far in the BG. I think that enlarging the car would fix it.

thatLD Featured By Owner Jul 7, 2013  Professional Filmographer
Hmm. I can kind-of-sorta see what you mean on that. It's a tricky shot in that the focus has to be on the right side.

Aww, man. I wish I could enlarge that car, but so many layers are attached to it that it would wipe me out to go back into that file.

I'll just have to be more discerning on the next round. This shot was done months ago. I've definitely grown since then.

Thanks for really taking a look at the shot and letting me know. It helped.

Photoshop and After Effects.

I make it a point to always mention the software in the Artist's Comments, but missed it this time. Thanks for catching that.

Feel free to share the Kickstarter campaign if you haven't already. It helps more than you know. Pledging even more so. :XD:
